The
Secret Lives of the Brain
(Review)
by Matthew Ferguson
A
fascinating and enlightening study of our brain/mind/biology
can be found in this compelling book 'Incognito
(The secret lives of the Brain)' by David Eagleman.
The
amazing thing is just how like, in the crudest sense,
our brain is to a biological
computer and how much the previous statement is a vast
over-simplification.
This
book is a must read for anyone interested in the science
of the brain and its implications. It describes how
so much of experience is controlled by our unconscious
processing and puts the concept of "free will" under
the scientific microscope. It doesn't mean we can't
influence our unconscious processing but it clearly
illustrates how much of what we think, feel and do is
rooted in the vast area of our unconscious.
We
have come a long way in our understanding of the brain
but it's a journey in understanding that is in its infancy.
The further we go on that journey the more it compels
us to ask more questions and challenge some cherished
beliefs that we may hold.
If
you are really curious with an open scientifically orientated
mind then you will enjoy this book and this journey
as much as I do.
