Falling in Love with your work all over again.

By Maureen Barrie

Did you ever wonder how you got to where you are now in your working life? Was it a conscious career move or did you somehow end up where you are. Whether or not it was planned makes no difference to that fact that you spend a huge chunk of your waking hours at work.

Does any of this sound familiar - my boss doesn't understand me, my colleagues are a pain, this work is boring, I'm going nowhere so why even bother trying, I'll never amount to anything, I wish I didn't have to work, why does time go so slowly, is it home time yet, my parents forced me down this road or never game me the right support, I never get the chance to do that??

Blaming everyone else is a classic trap. Even worse is blaming yourself and being your own worst critic. The so called blame game keeps you in a perpetual cycle of negativity where you feel like you'll never get off the treadmill of working life and is an avoidance tactic for facing up to reality. We often dream of the things we could do if we weren't tied to our jobs because of the money, the mortgage, and no other opportunities. Work merely becomes 'a job' that's like a huge weight chained around round neck and its so difficult to succeed at something you simply don't enjoy. You become less productive, make mistakes, are shorter tempered with your family and then your sleep gets disturbed. And so the cycle goes on.

Even if you are frustrated and unfulfilled at work but it pays you a decent enough salary to support you and your family then surely that is something positive to look at. And if you really think about it; what first attracted you to the role, the company, people you work with? What is it you do like about them? Once you start to break that negative cycle and focus on all the things you are grateful for and actually love about work then you'll start to notice a shift in your perspectives. The things that were a huge problem before suddenly don't seem so bad. A simple shift in attitude leads to a new perspective which in turn leads to a change in attitude and so it goes on.

In the same way that you may have learned to have that negative inner voice, you can also learn to create a positive inner voice. Next time you have a negative thought at work, try stopping for a moment and reframing it into something positive. With practice this will become a habit which then becomes the norm.

Another key point to note is that it really doesn't matter how you got to where you are now. Don't waste time and energy analysing it - the past doesn't matter, what you choose to be now is important, starting with a new attitude.

It is your own mind that keeps you stuck where you are now and by learning to control your mind with hypnotherapy and NLP you can start out on a new path. Bit by bit the chinks in the chain from the weight around your neck start to break and set you free. Free to fall back in love with what you already do, be more creative and open up a whole new set of opportunities for progression in your career or to do something else that you love, maybe even a hobby you could make money from. You'll be amazed at the changes you can make with a renewed sense of optimism.

How do I know this works? Well I've been there, done it, broke free from the chains and am soaring high and you can too.

I'll end with one of my favourite quotes:

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." ~Howard Thurman.
